• Ideation Edge Asia’s Healthcare 2.0

Lecture and Corporate Visit on 25 May 2016

at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital

Speaker: Mr Liak Teng Lit, Group CEO, Alexandra Health System

In his frank, no-holds barred and humorous style of speaking, the group CEO of the Alexandra Health regional health system, Mr Liak illustrated the inconvenient truths of the current healthcare system. On the positive aspects, average life expectancy of the population is increasing because of better medical care and medication. Affordability has been tackled by the government through the newly launched comprehensive health insurance scheme, MediShield Life. Elderly citizens are taken care of via the generous Pioneer Generation healthcare subsidies. On the flip side, some Singaporeans have absolved their responsibilities by abandoning their aged parents in nursing homes. Another segment of Singaporeans are not taking personal responsibility for their own health and expect the Government to provide high quality, accessible and affordable healthcare when they fall ill. He argued that over-providing excellent public healthcare facilities and medical care will lead to over-consumption of healthcare services or the “buffet syndrome”. He believed that technology will disrupt healthcare providers in a big way and some jobs could be taken over by artificial intelligence in the future. He also invited attendees to ask questions and handled the Q&A in a lively and humorous manner. After the talk ended, he hosted a visit to the newly opened 428-bed Yishun Community Hospital which is co-located with Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

INVESTMENT OUTLOOK 2015 – Dr Tan Kee Wee

The US Fed is poised to raise US interest rates, in the process tightening liquidity. Yet, the central banks of Japan and EU have done the opposite. How would this affect global interest rates?

Greece is now governed by a left-leaning political party. In the early weeks of its administration, it has sent shivers down investors’ backsides as the threat of a Greek debt default looms larger. Will Greece’s actions encourage more EU member countries to vote for anti-austerity parties?

Is the recent volatility in the global stock markets the beginning of a long-term slide? Attend this talk and hear what Dr Tan has to say about the global stock markets, where the global economies are heading, and what other investment assets like property and gold would do in year 2015.

Dr Tan Kee Wee helps his clients with advice on economics. Prior to that, Dr Tan spent many years in the finance industry as an economist, forecasting the financial markets and global economies.

Dr Tan started off his career in 1988 as a journalist with the Business Times. That was after he secured his PhD in Economics from the University of East Anglia in Britain.

Despite spending most of his career in the business world, he has kept in touch with academia. He continues to teach undergraduates economics on a part-time basis.
